Sydfisk's cod loin from Skrei is of the highest quality and environmentally certified with MSC.
Skrei is described as Norwegian cod at its best. The fish comes from the world's largest cod stock and is fished from January to April. This is the time when Skrei is traditionally fished and is at the peak of its life after it has become sexually mature. It migrates down from the Barents Sea to the Norwegian coast and this is where it is fished from the Möre coast in the south to the Finnmark coast in the north. About 40% comes from Lofoten and Vesterålen which are the two major spawning areas. Skrei cod has a lean white firm meat with a flaky consistency which is a result of the long migration. For best results, the internal temperature should reach 38°C when cooked.
The Skrei is part of the species Cod (Gadus morhua) but is from a different stock than the Coastal Cod that is usually sold in stores. The Skrei is the migratory part and comes from the Norwegian-Arctic tribe. It spends most of its life in the Barents Sea, which is very rich in nutrients, and only begins its spawning migration along the Norwegian coast when it reaches sexual maturity in about 5 years. The Norwegian coastal cod and Skrei do not mix and also have different appearances. The Skrei is longer, has a more pointed shape and a lighter pattern. The size of the Skrei can be up to 169cm long and weigh 55kg.
The name "skrei" means to wander, and this behavior is controlled by special wandering hormones that are turned on when it becomes sexually mature. Skei is also called Arctic Cod but can also be called jedd, jadd, bruning.
The skree has firmer, whiter and more delicate meat – the fish is also sustainably fished with the MSC Marine Stewardship Council.
Rich in vitamin D and Omega 3
Skrei is a very good source of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. For Nordic people in the past, it was especially important for those who didn't get much sun during the winter months.
When the spawning is over, billions of fertilized eggs float with the currents towards the nutritious feeding areas in the Barents Sea. After a couple of weeks, the eggs hatch and the cod larva continues its journey. It lives on plankton during the journey and by autumn the larva has developed into a small cod of 8-10 cm. It dives down to 200m to the nutritious feeding areas in the Barents Sea and after 4-5 years it is big enough to start its own migration and thus the circle is closed.
Skrei fishing has the green light from WWF and thanks to good management, the stock is sustainable and growing well, so you can eat skrei with a clear conscience.
